Happy Halloween

Hey guys, Happy Halloween!I hope you've been having fun trick or treating, if that ever happens in Malaysia :P

Anyways, it's been long since my last post. I'm quite busy lately, studying and preparing for the SPM examinations. It sucks...meh...

So, the last Tuesday some guys from Inti-UC came over and interviewed me for a scholarship award, it's called Leadership Excellence Awards :) . It didn't went too well, I kinda stuck when they asked me," What are the first three things that your friend will say when they think about you?" :O

Crap! XD (BTW I'm going into University in January)

Haha...So, I will write new stuffs soon, probably in a few days time.

Things(Post titles) soon to be blogged:
  • 350-Dance for the Planet
  • Adam, Eve, Noah

Ah... Since it's Halloween, I've found a video that I thought I will share with you guys. It's called "Halloween Candy Hax" LOL! Just take a look at the video.

So if you find that the kids next door are a bit of an annoyance for asking candy from you today, do this to them >:D

Alright... That's all for today, till next time, cheers~

Debunking Hang Li Po

I've been reading through the Malay Komsas today and found one interesting thing that I think I should share.

*Note that what I am about to write is the facts and nothing but the facts.

Okay, I'm sure all of you readers, if you are in Form 5 or older, you should know this literature character well, that is, Puteri Hang Li Po. We know her from a drama excerpt in our Malay Literature compilation "Kerusi".

Well, if you don't know her story, I'm going to do a bit of story-telling here.

====================================================================

According to historical sources (from local authors), this Puteri Hang Li Po is the fifth wive of the Sultan Mansor Shah of Melaka who reigned from 1456 to 1477. Sultan Mansor Shah made an attempt to foster diplomatic ties with the Ming Empire of China, he sent Tun Perpatih Putih with a letter to a trip to China to meet with the emperor at that time, Emperor Yong Le (永乐). After the meeting, the Emperor was thrilled and stated that he greatly admires Melaka's supremacy over the South-Eastern region, he was so eager to forge a closer tie with Melaka that he sent his beautiful daughter the princess, Li Po to marry the Sultan of Melaka.

And so Li Po was sent to Melaka and she was married to Sultan Mansor Shah. She was later known as Hang Li Po when the Sultan granted her the title "Hang" for her affords to adapt to the Malay culture and life.

====================================================================

Nice story, if it wasn't for that this was based on a real historical fact!

So, that was what the local version of books told us.

But... after a few hours of research and cross-references, I came out with one astounding discovery that surprised me.

Now, let me show you the flaws in the story of Puteri Hang Li Po:-
  • First of all, Puteri Hang Li Po's real name is Hang Li Po (汉丽宝), the Hang there was her surname, 汉, which is quite a common surname for Chinese during that era. All those stories about the Sultan awarding her the title "Hang" is not true.
  • The Emperor Yong Le was a true person no doubt. But, his reign was from 1402 to 1424. The history clearly states that Sultan Mansor Shah reigned from 1456 to 1477, which at that period of time in Ming Empire was ruled by Emperor Jing Tai (景泰) and then Emperor Tian Shun (天顺). For this to be true, one of the historical facts must be incorrect, which in this case, the Melaka one was more likely to be inaccurate.
  • Thirdly, Hang Li Po's surname was Hang, 汉, or if the version of history above is true, should be Li, 丽. The usage of surname is a Chinese Tradition, all daughters and sons of a family must be named after the surname of their father. But the Emperors in the Ming Dynasty all had the surname Zhu, 朱, which is not the same as Hang or Li. So, based on this fact, I can say that Hang Li Po is not the daughter of the Emperor Yong Le.
  • After an extensive search, I cannot find the other historical facts about Hang Li Po, except those written by local historians. And I've read an article saying that there's no historical record of Hang Li Po in the Chinese records.
  • One thing to consider is the fact that the Ming Empire is the strongest empire in the world at that time (maybe sharing the rank with the Spanish Empire, who started to colonize the Latin America). And Melaka is just a small trading state in South-East Asia. Logically, as the emperor of the most powerful empire in the world, would you send your precious little daugther to a barbaric, technological-inferior, insignificant southern state? I mean, I'm not saying that Melaka was weak. Melaka was strong economically because of the trading activities, but definitely not military-wise. Imagine, Portuguese conquered Melaka with only 1000+ men and less than 20 warships? Come on, that's like only a weeny-tiny little fraction of the Portuguese army la! To marry your daugther to a inferior state, what would the other powerful nations think of the emperor? 面子何处?!
  • Chinese Empires did not practice marriage-alliances, which means the emperors never marry their daughters to gain diplomatic relationship with other countries or states.
  • The Ming court forbids the conversion of the aristocratic members into another religion, so the possibilty that a Ming princess converted into Islam before marrying a Sultan is still disputed.

Tons of flaws... How? LOL...

Okay, here is my theory regarding Hang Li Po:
  • Hang Li Po couldn't have been the daughter of Emperor Yong Le due to the reasons above. But, she could have been the daugther of the emperor's court advisors, or maybe she was the emperor's unwanted concubine, OR Hang Li Po could have been a commoner or a peasant or a servant herself.
The Emperor may have granted her the status of "Princess" before marrying her to the Sultan. This can be done, and probably was done to satisfy the egoistic Sultan who thought that the chick was the emperor's daughter.
  • The fact that historical notes in China have no record of Hang Li Po leads me to another theory. Maybe Admiral Zheng He took matters into his own hands and sent a convoy to the Sultan and married the so-called "Princess Hang Li Po" to Sultan Mansor Shah, all without the emperor's knowledge. This explains that fact and also the other facts stated above.
  • This story could have been fabricated with a political motive or propaganda.

So... Now that we know what really happened, we should examine the motives. Tell me why should Ming Empire even care for Melaka? Melaka posed no threat, they can't even win wars, much less invade China. So why?

The only logical reason is that Ming Empire wants to protect it's trading interest in the South-East Asia.

The Melaka Straits is the only sea route to the western civilazation, and Melaka itself is a strong trading state.

By sending his "daughter" to marry the Sultan of Melaka, the emperor further solidify the Ming Empire's influence on Melaka. The Sultan would certainly protect the welfare of Chinese traders that traded in the Melaka port. And also the route to India or Europe will be less of a hostile territory.

Also, this was to prevent Siam from attacking Melaka, which will severely distrupt the trading activities between Melaka and Ming Empire. Siam held their attacks because they knew Melaka had a good diplomatic relationship with Ming Empire.

So... It's all about politics in the end. The Ming Emperor was never interested in an alliance with Melaka, they just made it seem like so to protect their own interest.

Does this mean that we were taught the wrong thing all this while? Maybe one day I should debate with my Malay Teacher and see what he saids...Hmm

Till next time, cheers~

Odyssey No.15: Ooo... It's getting hot in here!

.

Wow... Just half an hour of practice session yesterday and the next day my leg turned into jelly! Now it's so sore that to walk is like to have hammers hitting on your thigh... Argh! That sucks... Luckily this restriction motivated me to sit down and study instead of moving around doing nonsense...

Anyway, this post is about the last Saturday.

(This is a rare picture indeed!)
So, that morning, I was all prepared to leave the house for school, until Lixuan gave me a call andsaid the school is not opened! wtf?!

Turns out it was Deepavali and the guard was a bit grumpy so he didn't want to open the classrooms for us to use. Crap!

There goes the band practice session...

So we joked around in school until 10:30a.m. lor... Before going to Old Town for morning tea :)

And then I remembered that there's a 350-Dance for the Planet meeting in Midvalley today. So I decided to go, along came Zhi Lin who was reluctant but he had nothing else to do. The event was organized by Malaysian Youth Climate Justice Network and on the 24th of October, they will do a mob dance somewhere in KL (Okay, I dunno where, don't ask!)...

At 1pm in the afternoon, I drove back to house and then we walked down to the KTM station to take our train to Midvalley. The crowd was not bad for a public holiday, it wasn't too cramped. :P

We reached Midvalley at 2:10pm :O... We thought we're late for the meeting, turns out they are just starting to gather around.

They gathered at the Food Junction.
There was a Nikon fair down at the Central Court...Aww... Didn't went down to take a look.
Then we went to the exhibition halls to sit down and discuss.

"Hey cleaner!!! There's a spot here you've missed!!!"
"Here's the plan... We have no plans!"

"Alright, since we have no plans, let's just dance for fun!"

Join the Dance of Randomosity!

"Dance! Maggots! Dance!"

"Hey, we only need you to dance for six hours, no big deal!"

"That's not how you hold the camera! It goes like this, see how the zen flows?"

Yea, you guys really looks silly during the dance XD

So, the meeting was about an hour long. They did some jobs distribution, I'll be the photographer on that day. :)

And as you saw in the pictures, they did a bit of rehearsal of the dance, attracted attention of a lot of people :O ... Haha, it was quite funny, I mean, the dance... XD

Overall, I think the next Saturday should be fun, if the police didn't take it too seriously and arrest us I mean...

So after the meeting, go back lor. Zhi Lin's parents were there, so I'm left alone to take the KTM home. But wait!!! Minyi drove to Midvalley, so I get to take a ride home :D

It was raining out there...

To be honest, I'm more nervous than she was la... I mean, it's the first time I get to ride a girl friend's car, and she failed once in the car exam (Shh... This was supposed to be a secret!)

And I was right to be more nervous, she exited on the wrong road and then we ended up in Bangsar leh!!! Walau!!! XD

Haha, funny la. In the end it took about an hour to reach my house. Take KTM also faster LOL!

See Minyi, salah jalan also so happy... Selamba only =_="

Haha... Alright, a busy week coming soon. More exams, more studies!

Next update should about this coming Saturday. I'm sure there will be lots of photos so stay tuned.

Till next time, cheers~

Odyssey No.14: Asian Electone Festival @ Istana Budaya

.

Ah...Sorry for this late post, kinda felt guilty not sharing it. So here goes.

Last Saturday Zhi Lin, John and I went way north to Titiwangsa to catch the Asian Electone Festival!

Well, I thought it would be nice since it's an international competition and electone is still a new thing to me.

So we departed from the train station at 12:00p.m. , with absolutely no idea how we should go to Istana Budaya XD

Our stop was KL Sentral, we had our McDonald's lunch there.A picture of KL Sentral.

So, we took the Monorail to our destination, Titiwangsa. After another 20 minutes ride, we finally reached the last stop for the train.

Well, luckily Istana Budaya is visible from the monorail station, which means that it's within walking distance.

Okay, the walk was long. And we passed through blocks of abandoned buildings on our left, which looks haunted and very spooky...

Can you spot the ghost?

When we reached the place (it was my first time in Istana Budaya), my thought was it's quite a cool place. Took quite some photos there.

The theater in our sight!

A closer look.

The exhibition just outside the auditorium.

Beautiful neh...

Spreading the Love!

The entrance to the auditorium.

Some work of art by some local artist.

The time was like 1:30p.m., John called his teacher, Mr.Pok, who had our tickets. He came and gave the tickets to us. BUT THE COMPETITION STARTS AT 3.00p.m.!!! Aww... Came too early, no wonder the place is so empty.

Then we took out our books and study lo...SPM coming already ma...

The auditorium was opened at 2.45p.m., and we went inside to be seated. The interior was also SO COOL! XD... No la, but not too shabby either. Our way in.

This feels like "Phantom of Opera-ish"
The seats.
It's so empty :O
Aww... No chandelier leh...
We bought RM3 ticket :O

And so the event started at 3p.m., the emcee was, awful LOL! To be honest, she's not good enough, let's say, not up to par for international event la...

Okay... So about the competition it's quite entertaining, as electone can produce a piece like an orchestra.

But, there were a few things I would like to point out.

First of all, there was two contestant in the Junior Section that claimed that they composed and arranged their pieces for this competition. I'm skeptical la. One 8 years old girl compose a full orchestra piece ah? Who are you trying to bull? Mozart also not that pro la! And the other, 12 years old boy, his song is jazz wor! With jazz scales some more! Walau... I don't believe he composed that la...zzz... Seriously, what's wrong with these guys? I'm pretty sure their teacher helped them to compose the song, there's no way they could have done it themselves.

And uh, one thing I've found out, song choice is very important. Even though you are very skilled, when the song you played is shitty, you're shitty. The players there all are very pro, but some of them, their songs are just awful choice. That caused them the prizes. All the winners played impressive songs that just captivated the audiences.

One more thing!!! Banging the keyboard randomly will never win you any prizes!!!

Hmm... Nothing much then.

These are the winners for Junior Section. The winner is from Indonesia, who I agreed that he was the best. Runners-up was from Taiwan, was a bit nerdy, but hey his song was okay. The third prize... Okay, his song was nice, but I still don't think the boy composed that song.
For the Open Section, the winner was a Malaysian!!! His song was brilliantly done I'd say, he deserved the award. The second prize winner was a girl from Taiwan, she composed her own song, and it was brilliant too! Then the third prize went to a Thailand guy, it was okay, no comment. :P

Then there was a performance by the Special Guest Ayaki Saito, a professional electonist from Japan (duh!)... He was great! and not to mention humorous enough too...

And so, we left the building at 7p.m.. Tried to catch a taxi back to KL sentral since it's already very dark. Waited for quite a while before we got the cab.

The night view of Istana Budaya

The art gallery...

Night view of KL... Seriously, night photography is very interesting and fun. I wish I had a D-SLR and a tripod LOL!!!

So... Reached home at around 9pm, and there ends Odyssey number 14 :)

It was a new experience to travel in KL at night. Looking forward for my next time.

Next post - Odyssey No.15. So, stay tuned and till next time, cheers~

Odd, Isn't It?

.

Childrens, generations of tomorrow. They have massive amount of untapped potential, yes. They are the ones that will inherit this earth one day. The ones that will lead humankind to the next step in our history. The ones that will determine our fate as a species in the future.

But... what future?

Do we want a... Peaceful future?

Do we want a...Secular future?

Do we want a...Religious future?

or maybe some of us might say we want t greener future.

"What do we want?" That's the question. Of course, being a sane human, like everyone else around, I want a future where the earth is green, the world is in peace, the society is morally perfect and science is advanced.

Then again, think about it, are we heading that way? Or is it the other way? The earth being mutilated to death by us, nuclear war between nations, murderers walking around the streets as if it's a norm, science growth being stunted by political and religious interests.

By the looks of it, we're more in the latter on the fragile balance between ideal and cataclysmic future.

But if this happens, who's to blame? The childrens of today that will be the leaders of the future? Or us, their educators in their early upbringing?

Well, logic tells us it's their fault they ruined the world, they had the powers to change, to make it a better place for us, but they didn't and instead opted for the more destructive route.

Then again, to every problem, we have to examine it to the very roots before making any claims. The root of the problem is us, today's generation, today's leaders, today's educators, today's parents.

Well, I'm not going to talk about all of the problems, instead I'm just going to bring up one which is interesting : - Religious Indoctrination of Children.

*Again, if you had seen this post , you will more or less know that I'm not a big fan of religion.

To start off, take a look at this picture...

Hmm... Cute bunch of babies eh? Well, their so pure and innocent, and they have no idea at all what's happening around in this world.

Alright, let's pretend they live in Malaysia, and all of them are born in different family. Let's define their religion according to the religion of their parents shall we?

Ahh... Not that bad eh? 4 babies of different religion lying together in a same bed, how warm and fussy does it makes you feel inside :)

But did you notice something strange? Nevermind... Let's move on to another picture...

What if we define their musical taste according to the musical preference of their parents?

Oh...Kay... Again, let's move on to the next picture.

This time we categorize them to their favourite football team according to the football team their parents support.

Ahhuh... Looks a bit odd, isn't it?

The next one... This time we define them according to their parents' politics orientation.

:O

Wait, there's more...Political parties according to their parents.

What if their parents are racist, sexist, or sadist? Or just atheist?

Hmm.... What do you think?

To a normal Malaysian society (and most societies in the world), the first picture (the religion one) probably looks fine, and the others are just plain absurd, we can't possibly tell what football team do they like or what political parties do they prefer at this age.

But can I ask... What's the difference between those and religion?

Think about it for a second...

We do not force our children to like a genre of music, or which football team to cheer for, and yet we're forcing our children to believe in religion at such a young age when they have absolutely no idea what is religion?

That's Religious Indoctrination!

Of course, I'm not saying that religion is a bad thing. But shouldn't the children be given their right to choose what they want to believe?

A Muslim child was brought up in a family of Islamic faith, but he chose to believe in Christianity during his teenage, that's his right, right? (No pun intended)

Then why in the world should you forbid him from changing his faith? Was it because Allah would punish him? But if he embraces Christianity and pledges his allegiance to the Christianity God, then would the Christianity God protect him from Allah's punishments? Or are they the same God? If so why would he mind if we're Christians or Muslims? (I know this sounds silly, but I still don't understand how account transfer works in religion, since we have no contracts with God(s))

Again, what if a person choses not to believe? Is there a problem? You can switch hobbies anytime, you can choose to have Italian or Japanese or Chinese food, or none of them. But why religion cannot be subjected to the same freedom of choices? Isn't it all based on personal preferences?

Again, I ask you to think about it...

Now this brings me to another strange phenomenon. When you meet another person and then started a conversation, for example, on the topic of musical preferences, or politics, or etc, there are bound to be differences in opinion. What happens next? You have debates, critics, both voicing out what they think. And in the end of the day, it's not a big deal, we go home and nothing happens. (Watch what happens when you criticize religion in this country)

But why can't religion be subjected to debates and critics too? Is there anything so special about it that it's a taboo to speak about it? Does it mean that when God is involved in a topic we should all just keep quiet and be subjected to his will and mercy?

Does God even exist anyway? Or are we arguing over an imaginary being? (To be talked about in a future post)

We have a choice in religion people!!! We can choose what we want to believe!

The only thing (In my opinion) in this world that cannot be subjected to debates and critics is racial issues. Common sense? You are born a Chinese or Malay or African or Caucasian, you can't change the fact, you didn't have a choice, that what makes this topic sensitive if criticized or debated, that's what makes it special.

But you're not born Christian or Muslim, no, you have a choice to choose what to believe in! But  yet many parents are depriving their children of their right to choose, instead asking them to believe what the parents believed in (without rational thoughts).

If your father forces you to listen to Elvis Presley, how would you feel?

It's okay if you liked it too, but what if you prefer rock music? Would you feel oppressed, as if you don't have freedom?

I've seen so many children being brainwashed to be so committed into their religion that I sometimes think "What the hell is wrong with this world?"

Please, if you're a rational being, you would have thought like that too...

Sorry to say, but we as humans have much more important and better things to do than to pray to God hoping that everything will just fix themselves on their own. Imagine the time you spent on that is spent elsewhere, for example saving the environment, I'm sure it'll make a difference in this world.

====================================================================

This post was inspired by a documentary called "Jesus Camp" released in the year 2006. It talks about a Summer Bible Camp in the USA. I can't help but to feel sorry for the kids.

This is the link to the first video of the 8 parts video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhjIlhAShuU)

Please, watch it too if you have time. I beg you, and you'll understand why I wrote this.

And of course, I also wrote this because of a deep personal problem that I'm facing now, and I have no idea what should I do. If you think you're close enough with me and want me to share my problem with you, please do tell me (in the comments or the chatbox or whatever)... I will tell you personally when i have the chance...

====================================================================

So... Why so serious guys? Religion is just another way of life, and if we can make fun of it, laugh and still get on with life, that's real quality living.

Atheists even make fun of themselves too but it's all in the name of humour :)Your turn?

Till next time, cheers~

Pepper Spray and Balls?

Whoops, been long since I've updated. Well there's nothing much lately, just some stuffs in my life that is not too boring but not worth to be mentioned here either, that's why the lack of posting here :)

Here's a bit of my status now-

Music: Been practicing, not too much though. Wanted to compose one or two songs but can't find the time and privacy to do so. Currently practicing for the prom night performance, and conducting practice sessions for Music Club Form 2 band.

Study: Can't study lar... No time, no concentration, and tons of distractions. Gonna screw up my SPM. Subjects left to study - Biology, Chemistry, History, Komsas, Moral. Messed up my Biology exam, god knows how am I going to study Bio in Uni.

Sports: Stopped golfing for almost 2 months now. Really hope SPM passes soon so I can resume my training. Been having resistance training on my own though. Will get back into golf and badminton as soon as SPM ends. :)

Photography
: Been planning to get one D-SLR, no money leh (I want 500D only also no money T_T). Planning to go for a photography trip with my IXUS 80 after SPM, don't know, maybe some island like Redang or something, or backpacking, that would be fun :D .

Money: Biggest concern, been low on money even though I've not spent much. Damn neh..! But I have to admit la, I bought myself quite a few books about Biochemistry lately, quite expensive :O

Health: Sucks, feels like a zombie now that I've not got enough sleep even during the holidays.

Love: Feels so numb right now, someone help me?

Recent Happenings: Hmm... Not much, been to a couple of prom night meetings, and found out one interesting thing, but I'll leave it for my next post :P. Anyways, it was quite smooth (the second one I mean). Heard Nat talking about almost being robbed, she was confronted by a robber in the parking lot at Sunway Pyramid. Then she took out pepper spray and shot the guy in the face before lifting her legs forcefully into his groin area (in other words, she kicked his balls), that robber was paralyzed instantly and was later caught, OUCH! :P    Anyways it was quite funny how she explained the situation at that time.

Recent Interests: Found myself playing chess again lately, the last time I played non-stop was 3 years ago, interest stuff :P ... Been listening to a band called Big If, it was all because of Ryan Keys, they haven't released their first album yet but their demo songs are awesome! And I'm back into writing stories again, so who have any good storyline ideas that you want to be penned down please ask me I can write the story for you LOL!

Future Plans: Not much plans right now. Working on a Music Camp for next year, and then maybe will try to get a part-time job at The Guitar Store (to learn music from pros at the same time). Applying for Inti Scholarship, but either way I'll still enroll myself there (or Taylors College) for A-Levels before going into Bioscience at Taylors. Hopefully I don't change my mind about what to study again :)

So, that's about all I have to say for now. My next post, which will probably be in tomorrow or the next day or the next next day, will be about leadership (or religion, depending on my mood).

Stay tuned and till next time, cheers~
